Komala's Restaurants

Komala's Restaurants is a Singapore-based restaurant-chain serving Indian vegetarian cuisine.() The group has restaurants overseas in India, Thailand, Indonesia and Canada. Started in 1947 by Murugiah Rajoo in Singapore, the restaurant became known for its low priced high quality Indian food. The restaurant is popular with all walks of life, and it is part of the Komala's Group run by M. Rajoo's son, Mr. R.T. Sekar. Komala's introduced the Indian Vegetarian fast food restaurant concept in July 1995 at Little India. A year later, it opened a high-end Indian restaurant for fusion dining known as ''The Gangzes'' and in 1997, it formed Komala's Group to be the parent company of the fast food chain of Komala's Restaurants, separate from the Komala Vilas chain. Two Komala's restaurants opened in 1998 in the city centre, one at Scotts Shopping Centre, a prime area in Orchard Road and the other at Peninsula Plaza.
In 1999, Komala's opened a franchise pilot outlet cum cooking school in Chennai, India, to launch the Komala's franchise. The Gangzes was launced in Chennai in the year 2000, and a franchise outlet opened at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It later opened a number of franchise outlets overseas, but most eventually closed. In 2002, it opened a fast food restaurant at Marine Cove at East Coast Park and a franchise outlet opened in Bangkok, Thailand a few months later. The year 2003 saw Komala's launching delivery service for its fast food. Komala's opened an outlet at Serangoon Plaza and a franchise outlet in Indonesia in 2004, The Gangzes also opened at Serangoon Plaza that year. Between 2004 and 2005, Komala's opened three new restaurants in Singapore, which has since closed. In 2005, Komala's made foray into the North American market with its first restaurant in Scarborough, Toronto, Canada. This location has now closed.
